This project evaluates an educational intervention developed by the Long Beach Unified School District-the male academy at Wilson Classical High School, referred to as Wilson Male Academy (WMA). The purpose of the evaluation is to determine the effectiveness of the WMA in improving members' academic achievement and engagement, social integration, and racial/ethnic understanding in the school. We are also interested in understanding how participation in this organization influences members' social and academic engagement and their ideas about how to be a successful student. The research design includes the WMA as the treatment group, and a control group of male and female non-WMA participants. We will conduct observations and focus groups, administer survey questionnaires, interview teachers and students, and collect student records data.
