Biography

Laurie Hansen is a graduate of the UCI Ph.D. in Education specializing in Language, Literacy, and Technology (LLT) in the School of Education at UC Irvine. Dr. Hansen's primary research interest is in the impact of children's book choices, access to books, and reading behavior on their vocabulary knowledge and reading comprehension. Dr. Hansen is particularly interested in studying language minority children's literacy development. In particular, why do some language minority children successfully attain fluency in English while others remain long-term English language learners?  What national and state testing and language policies marginalize language minority children's school success?

Prior to studying at UCI, Dr. Hansen was a lecturer in the Department of Elementary and Bilingual Education at California State University Fullerton (CSUF) from 1999 to 2007. There she taught several courses related to elementary teaching, multicultural education, and linguistically diverse children. Laurie began her career as an elementary school teacher in the Los Angeles Unified School District.

Dr. Hansen holds a Master of Science in Curriculum and Instruction from CSUF, a Master of Arts in Education from UCI, a California Clear Multiple Subject Teaching Credential with a CLAD (Cross-cultural Language and Academic Development) certificate, and a Ph.D. from the University of California, Irvine. Her dissertation was titled Patterns of Independent Reading, Vocabulary Knowledge, and Literacy Skills among English-Only, Limited-English Proficient, and Fluent-English Proficient Children.

At UC Irvine, Dr. Hansen has taught the following courses:

  • ED50: Origins, Purposes, and Central Issues in Education
  • ED124: Multicultural Education in K-12 Schools
  • ED347A and ED347B: Cultural Diversity and Equity

Dr. Hansen’s career goals include research and publishing, and teaching at the university level as a tenure track professor.
