Intern Council Holds Bi-Yearly Meeting at Department of Education
Advisory Council Coordinator Karol Gottfredson hosted the Winter Advisory Council Meeting in the Department of Education on January 20. The Council is an organization of administrators and educators from partner school districts and the Orange County Department of Education (OCDE). Members meet twice a year with educators and administrators from UCI's Department of Education to discuss local issues impacting education and work together in support of UC Irvine's teacher credential programs.
During the January 20 meeting, members discussed improvements in hiring opportunities for newly-credentialed teachers and projections for 2012-2013; shared school-based strategies for sustaining the current work force; and discussed new directions proposed for UC Irvine's single subject and multiple subject teacher credential programs. Multiple Subject Coordinator Christina Giguiere explained the department's move toward full implementation of the paired student teacher model where two student teachers work under the guidance of an experienced mentor teacher. Kris Houston and Sue Marshall of UCI's Cal Teach program explained how they administer their paired model for STEM student teaching. They also announced that 23 candidates are projected to graduate in 2013 with their B.S. and teacher credential. Members expressed their strong support for the UC Irvine Intern Teacher program, citing the many positive experiences their teachers and students had experienced with UCI Interns.
In closing the meeting, Ms. Gottfredson urged members to consider attending the California Teacher Corps Conference to be held February 9-10 in Napa Valley.
