Swedish Educators from Nacka Municipality Visit UC Irvine

On November 1, a delegation of 15 educators from Nacka Municipality, Sweden, visited the Department of Education to share experiences with the use of technology in education. The morning included two presentations by UC Irvine professors, a presentation by technology specialists from the Capistrano Unified School District, and three presentations by our Swedish guests.

Following a greeting from Department Chair Deborah Lowe Vandell, Professor Mark Warschauer presented the address he delivered to the California State Senate Informational Hearing on Technology Integration in Education Select Committee on Emerging Technologies and Economic Competitiveness. Kathy Bari, Director of Educational Technology & Information Systems, and Susan Holliday, Executive Director, of Educational Technology & Information Services, Capistrano Unified School District, discussed their successes and challenges with implementing a “Bring Your Own Device” program in K-12 schools. Swedish IT Strategist Jimmy Svensson delivered a status report on the Unos Uno Project, a study of the impact of 1:1 computing on teaching and learning. The study, currently in progress (2010-2013), involves 23 schools and 11 municipalities. (PowerPoint)

Principal Anita Malmjärn Askelöf, Assistant Principal Monika Neuman, and Assistant Principal Inger Lison shared a video created by students that showcased the integration of technology across disciplines and grade levels, beginning in nursery school.

Assistant Principal Olof Andersson used a PowerPoint presentation to demonstrate how students in his middle school are immersed in the blending of academic knowledge with practical application throughout all subject areas, with each student given a personal MacBook computer.

Assistant Professor Beth van Es completed the morning session with a discussion of the use of video clubs for teacher professional development. (PowerPoint)

Following lunch at the University Club, the Swedish educators were given a tour of UC Irvine.

During their time in Southern California, the educators were able to observe classroom use of technology at school sites in Palm Springs and Fullerton.
