Highlights from the 2011 State of the Department Address

The Department has established two school-wide research centers:

  • Center for Research on Cognition and Learning
  • Center for Research on Out-of-School Time

Two new faculty members have joined the Department:

  • Assistant Professor Joshua Lawrence, whose research interests include adolescent reading, vocabulary development, longitudinal analysis, and second language acquisition
  • Assistant Professor Tesha Sengupta-Irving, who studies math education, equity and diversity, and teacher education

Two additional faculty searches are underway at this time:

  • Assistant Professor, Math & Science
  • Assistant Professor, Educational Equity and Diversity 

Faculty grants and contracts for 2010-2011 totaled over $7,800,000. Out of 56 proposals, 44 (79%) were awarded. Currently, 81% of Senate faculty have funded research. 

During 2010-2011, the Department received $676,000 in foundation, corporate, and private philanthropy and established the Department of Education Leadership Council to guide future fund-raising efforts.

Distinguished Professor of Education Greg Duncan delivered 2011 Society for Research in Child Development (SRCD) Presidential Address titled "Give us Our Daily Breadth."

Assistant Professor Thad Domina was awarded Outstanding UC Irvine Teacher in the UC Irvine 2011 Celebration of Teaching.

Professor Mark Warschauer returned from a year sabbatical in Japan and published Learning in the Cloud.

The UC Irvine Ph.D. in Education welcomed 19 new students in Fall 2011, the fifth year of the program. The 2011 application cycle had the largest applicant pool (105), was the most selective (23%), and produced the highest yield (80%).

Laurie Hansen, a member of the 2007 entering class, received her Ph.D. in Winter 2011. Fifteen other doctoral students from the 2007 and 2008 entering classes have advanced to candidacy.

Ph.D. students recorded over 50 conference presentations and papers published or in press this past year.

The UCI/UCLA Joint Ed.D. program graduated all students: 77 doctoral degrees were earned by working professionals pursuing their Ed.D. in Educational Administration.

Undergraduate student credit hours, which have increased every year since 2006, increased 16% over the previous year to 17,714.

The Department established the Promising Future Teacher Award and recognized 17 credential candidates as Promising Future Teachers.

Over 300 students graduated in 2011 with a Minor in Educational Studies.

UC Irvine Cal Teach, a multi-school collaboration involving Biological Sciences, Physical Sciences, and Education, currently has 22 students receiving both their science or mathematics degree and a California teacher credential. 0ver 200 students are enrolled in coursework

The UC Irvine Teacher Credential program has 231 students enrolled this year; 55% are seeking their Master of Arts in Teaching. The Department established the Mary Roosevelt Honor Scholars in Teaching and Learning Award and recognized nine outstanding MAT students for their scholarship and their dedication to improving the lives and educational opportunities of students.

The Teacher Education Integrated Information System (TEIIS), created at UC Irvine to serve as a central repository of records for credential programs, has been implemented at six UC campuses.

The Department of Education was one of departments selected on the UC Irvine campus to help design components for the campus doctoral learning outcomes project.
