Abstract

Common wisdom holds that it is easiest to identify teacher candidates on either end of the continuum -- the exceptional candidates who either excel or fail. In contrast to this expectation, we found in an earlier study that university supervisors did not provide more accurate predictions for high- and low-performers on the PACT teaching event than for other candidates.  In this follow-up study, we focus on the four high-performers and the four low-performers who had the greatest difference between their supervisor’s predictions and their actual total scores. These in-depth case studies explore how and why these differences occurred and consider implications for assessment of pre-service candidates.
