Associate Professor Joseph Mahoney was an invited presenter at the International Conference on Out-of-School Time held in Geissen, Germany on November 23-25, 2010. Representatives from eight countries – England, Germany, Holland, Japan, Korea, Sweden, Switzerland, and the United States – participated in the conference. Participants were part of the newly formed Network on Extracurricular and Out-of-School Time Research that aims to foster scientific collaboration among nations that have made comprehensive efforts to expand and develop learning and care opportunities to supplement (traditional) schooling.
In their presentation “Out-of-School and Extracurricular Activities: Perspectives on Research in the United States of America”, Dr. Mahoney and co-presenter Denise Huang, Senior Researcher at the UCLA Center for Research on Evaluation, Standards, & Student Testing (CRESST), discussed a number of issues pertaining to organized out-of-school activities and programs in the U.S. including: historical growth, major policy initiatives, conclusions from research and evaluation, and future direction and challenges.
