If you have any special equipment needs from our Equipment Checkout pool, we ask for notification from you to gse-tech-help@uci.edu at least 24 hours in advance. If you have any special software needs, we ask for a minium of one week notice in advance. Software can be very difficult to order, obtain and install in a short period of time. We also cannot guarantee any software can be purchased. Our budget is entirely limited to the hardware and software we already purchase and support. We find it better in most cases if you choose free software for instructional purposes. It is not only free to us, but free to your students to download and use on their own machines forever after.
As an alternative to using computer labs (which are disappearing fast these days), consider having your students use their own laptops in any regular classroom. Almost every student at any university enters with a laptop. They can download or purchase their own copy of required software before class, load it on their own machines and practice with it before coming to class. Most for-cost software is offered to students at incredibly huge discounts through the Bookstore. More and more free software is available online. For any student without a laptop, Tech Services has a limited supply of both Windows and Apple laptops which may be checked out on a class-by-class basis.
Using a laptop model instructors can include computer-based instruction in any classroom. Once the software required has been installed on the students' own machines, the software and all their work will go with them as they move on into the "real" world. They can work on computer asignments anywhere they have their laptop and never have to worry about coming in to use a lab. If campus licenses for any software students purchase expire after they leave school, the student is free to download or purchase the software on their own to continue using it. The laptop model of computer instruction has many advantages over computer labs.
